9/7/2025 Charley Crockett (from the album Dollar a DayCharley Crockett (from the album Dollar a Day available on Lone Star Records/Island Records/UMG) (by Danny McCloskey)
While his music is time-stamped to an vintage era in Country music, Charley Crockett makes each note sound fresh. His timing for releases that could claim AM gold soundtracking cross-country truckers routes mixed with wearing the crown of honky tonk king is a few decades late, however Charley Crockett sings his influences, marking them as peers, with his music. His recent release, Dollar a Day, smoothly keeps his brand of music on the same stream that brought him to the attention of true believers world-wide; whether orchestral strings are cruising on a Country Funk backbeat (“Alamosa”) or dark melodies walks a late-night noir guitar growl (“I Stay Ready”). A horse-beat hoof rhythm rides underneath “Ballad of a Lonesome Drifter” as the pedal hits the metal for the runaway groove in “Destroyer”. Charley Crocket is a spinning wheel of Country music styles on Dollar a Day, his songs provide a jukebox quarter-collector of cuts that range between balms for hurting hearts and beats for dancing feet. The release is the second installment for the Charley Crockett musical series, The Sagebrush Trilogy, following edition #1, Lonesome Drifter, which arrived earlier this year (March 2025). Dollar a Day was recorded (once again) in Hollywood at the famed Sunset Sound Studio 3 with Shooter Jennings returning to sit in the producers chair. Of the process and his producer, Charley Crokett shared that ‘with Shooter, I’ve never felt more like myself in the studio. I don’t feel judged. At all. It’s truly a partnership. Hell, I’d say he’s my best friend, and you can’t aspire to greatness without that kind of trust. With Lonesome Drifter, it felt like we opened the portal. With Dollar A Day, we stepped through and came out the other side’. The Cosmic Country of The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers is alive and well in “Tennessee Quick Cash” as Dollar a Day hushes its rhythms to tell a story coaxed by a gnarly guitar riff pushed out by a Leslie-amp to accent its electric notes. A jam band swagger rocks the story of “Crucified Son” where Charley Crockett offers a possible resume of his career. The tale mirrors the life of the man whose name is on the album cover, who has climbed from street-corner busking obscurity to dive bar stages and on into a worldwide platform of up-scale theaters and festivals. Finger-crossed for the devil letting go of the soul for the main character in “All Around Cowboy” as Dollar a Day asks “Ain’t That Right” on a Classic Country strut while Charley Crockett offers life-advice as dancers kick up sawdust spinning around the dancefloor for “Die with My Dreams On”.
