Charley Crockett (from the album Age of the Ram

Charley Crockett (from the album Age of the Ram available on Lone Star Rider Records/Island Records/UMG) (by Danny McCloskey)

An announcer’s voice declares ‘and now for our Feature presentation’, leading the way to echoey piano notes and acoustic strums. Charley Crockett introduces his hero on “The Life & Times of Billy McLane (Theme 1)” to kick off the 20-songs on his recent release, Age of the Ram. A runaway rhythm plays catch-up to the cities flying by in the story of “Me & Shooter” as a Country & Western trot supports “Low Down Freedom” while “Crazy Women Ridge” plays a Western tale, the stage on the same scene for the man on the run in “Diamond Belle (Country Boy)’.

Finishing the Sage Brush Trilogy, Age of the Ram is installment number three in an album co-produced by Charley Crockett and Shooter Jennings. History takes a last stand in “I Shot Jesse James” as a prayer is sent out to the gods of the desert blowing “Border Winds”. A dark rumble follows a traveling man who shares his life in “Kentucky Too Long” while rhythms ride a train-track beat to detail the “Fastest Gun Alive”. Charley Crockett is a storyteller; a chronicler of the West, its deserts and mountains providing tales of the men and women who are much a part of the land as the towns and open territory that are marks on its map. A tangle of acoustic guitar notes unravels the story of “Powder River” as Age of the Ram makes a toast with “My Last Drink of Wine” and bids goodbye to “Lonesome Dove”. Sepia-toned images rise and fall in the songs on Age of the Ram when a chorus of desert angels sing the praises of “Sweet Mother Texas” as Charley Crockett sings of “Billy McLane” before exiting the album on the rattling rhythms of “Cover My Trail Tonight”.
