Some may find a seven cut album to be on the short side. Arguable yes, but when those seven tracks are stacked with gusty verbiage from the America’s front yard, you’ll forget that Charles Wesley Godwin’s recent release Lonely Mountain Town has less than ten songs, instead focusing on the reality that its seven tales are packed with stories all of us share. A remote guitar kicks off Lonely Mountain Town with the title track, a cut that displays the open and alone as Godwin describes a town that ‘feels empty when there’s people all around’. It’s an ambient cut for those that while surrounded by others, feel like they’re the last person on earth. ERNEST joins Charles Wesley Godwin on “Dead to Rights”, a sad love song that talks of someone coming out of the blue like ‘a damned left hook I never got to see’ while “She Don’t Love Me Anymore” is an aching ballad that perfectly conveys being on the wrong side of a break-up, a side where all you can do is second guess and hurt like hell. Scott Avett joins in on the album closer, a stunning version of Jason Molina’s “Hammer Down”. It’s a cut for the road, taking you away to anywhere, a lonely score where keyboards hone in on subtle R&B, the line ‘stars are neon lights shining through the dancefloor of Heaven on a Saturday night’ is a lyrical contribution that stacks with the best. Thanks, Molina for writing, and Charles Wesley Godwin for turning a new group of people onto the tunes beauty. This is Folk music at its finest, a contemplative look into the life of a songwriter not afraid to share his good and bad with anyone willing to give a listen.
