A man and his guitar, CC Nichols is first and foremost a Folk musician. On his recent release, Hell on the Potomac, he stretches the borders of Folk Rock by including healthy doses of traditional Appalachian music and the power of a Rock’n’Roll backbeat. The sound swirls around CC Nichols when he admits “I Think I Got This Wrong” while he softens the backing to a whisper when he relates the tender tale of “Annalee”. Hell on the Potomac balances hopes with reality in “Wasting Time” and walks with an assured stride across the satisfied grin singing it's song in “I’m So Proud”. A full confession writes the story when CC Nichols opens Hell on the Potomac with “Angry Stranger” as he reads an open letter of thanks tracing the passage of time in “You and Me”. The ground that the stories stand on, like the songman singing and strumming, are rooted in the greater Cumberland area on the edges of West Virginia. Hell on the Potomac is a deeply regional recording, the tales balanced in the space between values the demand allegiance and the contradictions that prompt questions. The extremes collide in the Hell on the Potomac title track as the album hops an a runaway Rock’n’Roll rhythm to list the troubles the world has kept at arm’s length with “Other People”. CC Nichols introduces “Irene” on a slowly rotating rhythm before exiting the album with the celebratory confessions of “Naked on New Year’s Eve”.
