3/28/2026 Cat Clyde (from the album Mud Blood BoneCat Clyde (from the album Mud Blood Bone available on Concord Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
This is what anything labeled ‘Roots’ should sound like. From Punky Blues with nods to Country, Cat Clyde is someone who lives in those sounds, all delivered with a sometimes-sultry lounge texture, sometimes as gritty Garage Rock. Her latest release, Mud Blood Bone, bangs, bounces, and sways. It’s a record with a DIY-punch; a tough gal dropping personal reflections and opinions. There’s the album opener “Where is My Love?” where Cat Clyde ponders a dislike of emptiness via her vacant love life, kicking off with a high lonesome intro before it turning the cut into a roadhouse bouncer. “Man’s World” finds Clyde detailing the reality of being female in the ever-more male dominated world over stabbing guitar. “Dark Back” is a beautiful ballad and a lonely late-night weeper while “Hold My Hand” is wonderful cocktail-lounge Pop. The country nod comes on Marty Robbins’ “My Love”, Cat Clyde’s version taking few liberties, with the exception of raising its Goth Folk bar. “Wanna Ride” is pure Power Pop disguised in a dirty Garage Rock ripper. “Press Down” is more Blues bounce and the album closes with the dreamy “Another Time.” Her sound has some Dexter Romweber influences; the powerful Punk Blues nodding to all music that rests comfortably outside of the mainstream from the last 50 years, but then Cat Clyde will slip in some glorious digs into Pop. It’s all just fantastic.
