Dreamlike Americana and atmospheric Folk music combine as a soundtrack for Caroline Spence. For her fifth album, the recently released Heart Go Wild, the musician hears her own answers in the stories as she stretches out on the songs, her first album release flying under the freedom of self-releasing after a career that partnered her with a major record label. Prior to putting together songs, Caroline Spence spent time listening to the music of her peers, discovering she was drawn to ‘highly-saturated up-tempo songs and gorgeous, roomy, intimate tracks, and everything lived together. All of a sudden, it felt possible to make an album like that.’ The melodies float into Heart Go Wild when Caroline Spence opens the album with “Confront It”, the music rising slowly to join the power of her vocals. She wonders “Where the Time Goes” over a sparkle of acoustic guitar notes that circle above a determined groove and walks with heavy footfalls through “The Sound of You”.

Co-producing with collaborators Mark Campbell and Peter Groenwald, the trio created Heart Go Wild over the course of a year. Caroline Spence embraced the feel in love with the recording process, sharing that ‘we really gave ourselves permission to go down the rabbit hole. For 'Dried Flowers, Old Habits' we put a cinderblock on the sustain pedal of a piano and opened it up, so Peter could pluck the strings like it was a bass. For other songs, we would send instruments through the Leslie like it was an amp. The whole process was so playful and joyous’, The exuberance she felt is translated into song for Heart Go Wild as the album picks up the pace with a Rock’n’Roll backbeat for “Fun at Parties” while notes flicker before succumbing to the forceful beat in “Where the Light Gets Through” and tells a tale with “Why the Tree Loves the Ax”. The title track strides persistently under the lyrical flow of Caroline Spence as she becomes a “Soft Animal” while regimental strums wander through “Heart Like a Mirror”. (by Danny McCloskey)
