Caleb Klauder and Reeb Willms are a dance duo. Whether a slow sway, subtle head bob, or full blown, knee-lifting Boogie, their sound forces movement. On their latest, Gold in Your Pocket, that movableness is influenced by a weepy ballad or jumpy number loaded with twang, timeless cuts right at home at an Old-Time barn dance or a mid-summer festival. Sometimes you’ll find the motion from heartbreaking content; like the opener in “He’s Gone”, heart-wrenching on one hand as you mourn a passing, celebratory on another knowing despite the passing, that person has gone on to eternal happiness if that belief is your thing. Content aside, the flatpicking, fiddle shredding, and other instrumentation remains top-notch from the opening to the final cut. “Most Lonely Day” is ready for two-stepping as Klauder’s vocals are delivered with a lonely ache, and that anguish continues from Willms on the sad, Folkie “Last of My Kind”. “Shame Shame Shame”, despite being a song of scolding, comes with a playful bounce, and that liveliness is all over the title track, the two aforementioned would be right at home in a jumping Jazz club. “Faraway Skies” is a lonely Western number, and the closer in “T & J’s Lullaby” is a cut you’d sing in a whisper while rocking a young one to sleep. Sad songs and country tales will always inspire dance, especially when delivered by a smoking band armed with the ability to bang out a ripping record of Hillbilly Jazz.
