Brother Elsey isn’t afraid to drop some good and honest emotion. The recent release from this Nashville-based band is topped-off with feelings, from the tone and sound of their aching vocals to a load of lyrical admissions; if music is a vehicle of expressing and sharing feelings, then Brother Elsey’s self-titled debut is souped up and ready to go the distance. The band kicks things off with the ultra-sad “Passing Through”. With hushed vocals and simple quiet instrumentation, it is a cut that weeps openly. Brother Elsey dig into dreamy Folk on “Blameless”, and then they hit those aforementioned admissions on “Wrong Things”. The cut kicks off with a pushy guitar pulse before they throw out lines like ‘you probably hate me now, but that’s all right’, ‘I’ve been doing wrong things’, and the super-sad claim of ‘I’ve been a mess, I know enough to know you’re leaving”. Add those to the line of ‘a perfect life is out of reach” and you’ve got text-book phrases for Emo-driven Folk Rock. “Silver Tongue” comes with a twangy vibe, “Babylon” has quiet, plucked guitar under hushed vocals and the closer in “Dreamer” delivers an inspirational vibe, a toughness that comes from ‘taking it on the chin again’. These songs float, a perfect means of arrival for a sound that’s soft and drifting.
