A funky strut takes Big Chief Bo Dollis Jr and The Wild Magnolias in their recent co-release, Chip Off the Old Block. The percussive funk of opening cut “Young Time Indians/Indian Red” gives a shout out to the Mardi Gras Indian crews that lead that strut for New Orleans Street Parades from marching down Canal Street as well as winding down the narrow side streets of the French Quarter. The band let the beat guide the rhythms of Chip Off the Old Block as they promote moving along in “Shake”, slowing the groove to a sizzle for a personal shout-out in “Baby You’re Gone” as the pounding of drums blends with the jangle of tambourines to drive the call and responses of “Indians Here Dey Come”.

Marking out home turf, Big Chief Bo Dollis Jr and the Wild Magnolias offer an invitation to ‘let the music fill your soul’ for “Dance with Me” as they hammer a slow-cooked Blues into “A Nickel and a Nail”. Big Chief Bo Dollis Jr is the son of Bo Dollis Sr, a major force of the Mardi Gras Indian Funk sound. Dollis Jr began marching with The Wild Magnolia crew at ten-years-old, going on to become Big Chief of the Mardi Gras Indian contingent. Combining West African rhythms and the Soul sound of Memphis with elements of Funk and Jazz, Chip Off the Old Block is a spinning wheel of New Orleans soundscapes. Rhythm and Blues back the warnings of “You Let a Good Thing Go Bad” as a badass groove demands attention in the title track while Big Chief Bo Dollis Jr & The Wild Magnolias cover Otis Redding in “Hard to Handle” (by Danny McCloskey)
