BettySoo (from If You Never Go Away

BettySoo’s got a timeless thing going on. Sometimes when you put on a record you can put a timestamp on the release, nailing something down if it’s from a particular decade. That’s not the case on BettySoo’s latest, If You Never Go Away, as she delivers a little AM gold, some 1970’s Laurel Canyon elements, and a load of singer/songwriter vibes from every decade. It’s that timelessness that gives this release great appeal, as she’s got an ear for sound of yesterday and an understanding of future sonics.
There are cuts like the opener that comes with an ambient acceptance, “What Do You Want from Me Now”, the track ripe for a sad slow dance, while “Lovering” comes with casual keys and a skip-along pace. “Light It Up” is a thick mover that has a stack of fun horns, and BettySoo moves into Psychedelic Lounge territory on “Human Echo”, the latter thick with a 1970’s vibe, especially when the keys from the hotel-lounge bar kick in; its lovely. The album closer finds her joined by Austin colleague James McMurty; his laid-back croon hovering just above BettySoo’s vocals on a sad but superb ballad.
The constant keyboards are thick on this release, a fantastic accompaniment to BettySoo’s voice that is perfect for 21st Century lounge. (by Bryant Liggett)
