Benjamin Tod (from the album Vengeance and Grace

Benjamin Tod (from the album Vengeance and Grace available from Benjamin Tod/Thirty Tigers) (by Danny McCloskey)

Both sides of the musical coin are handled by Benjamin Tod on his recent release. The album, Vengeance and Grace, showcases Benjamin Tod fronting a full band as well sitting center stage with the spotlight hitting just a man and his guitar. Vengeance and Grace offers twenty tracks, ten songs with the band, the second ten solo. Same songs; a different musical backing infused with equal amounts of emotion.

The title track begins the song cycle when Benjamin Tod looks in the mirror as he sings of lessons learned and intentions for the future with “Vengeance and Grace”. The musical backing is buoyant on the cut as the band shifts gears for a jukebox weeper with the swaying to the sound of sad Country in “Closing the Door”, the tempo staying slow for the confessions of “It’s What You Meant”. Vengeance and Grace finds itself at the “End of My Rope” against a determined backbeat and salvational organ swells, picking up the pace for “Goner”, and singing of “My Pride” with a front porch Folk Country soundtrack.

The stripped-back solo side of the album lets Benjamin Tod’s plaintive vocals take the lead, breaking as they rise above the near-whisper of the guitar in “Vengeance and Grace (Alone)”. Separated by the (Alone) designation for the solo version of the songs on the album, Benjamin Tod faces mortality in “Martyr of a Man (Alone)”, speaking to our shared experiences for “The Bottle’s Gone (Alone)”, and making promises with “Ticket Home (Alone)”, before exiting Vengeance and Grace defiantly for “I Ain’t Bound (Alone)”. (by Danny McCloskey)
