Unpredictability can be an ace for some bands. Especially groups that chase sound over salary; and that is a band like Denver’s Banshee Tree, who on their latest release, Bad Luck, produce anthemic, Psychedelic Pop and Indie Roots Americana, all with subtle touches of mellow Jazz or front parlor Lounge music. “Look High Over the Mountain” begins like a mellow, piano-driven Pop ballad before tender backing vocals turn it into a dreamy cut of Psychedelia. The Bad Luck title track is propelled by more soft vocals and reverb-drenched guitar. “Might Stay”, with demands of its acoustic guitar, has a wide-open, barrel through the vast West vibe, and “Stellar Jay Theme” is an interlude of Soft Jazz that serves as a link between other cuts. “Glue” is a Blue, NewGrass cut with click-clack rhythms and pounding banjo that comes from left-field, and the closer, “Above the Lightning”, is a track that skips along; a head bobber that remains in line with the trippy meanderings of the whole release. It is a cut that starts quiet, ending by treading into Jazz Fusion territory, as Banshee Tree prove they are capable of musically stretching out. Bad Luck remains quiet and catchy. Those in need of genre defining bands can keep rolling, and for fans of just about everything original and innovative, Banshee Tree provide, and promise a curve-ball ride.
