Oregon based Honky-Tonkers, Ashleigh Flynn & The Riveters return for their sophomore album, Good Morning, Sunshine. The all-female group continues to prove that they can go toe-to-toe with the big boys. Blending Country rhythms with Rock’n’Roll attitudes, the band packs a blue-collar punch, just like their iconic WWII namesake, Rosie the Riveter. “Eye on the Light” is a spirited two-stepper that encapsulates the energy of The Riveters. A chooglin’ drum beat, rockabilly guitar licks, and fiery fiddle strains drive the rhythm. Despite the cheery intro, Ashleigh Flynn misses her distant lover. Singing ‘well the moon tonight is shining down on me. It’s the same moonlight that my baby sees’ she notes the distance between Ashleighr and her lover. Rather than pine away in loneliness, Flynn finds hope in a moonlight metaphor. She sings ‘I hope and pray that she believes in love. Let that magic reminder be the light up above’. Just as the moon brings light to the darkness, her love illuminates her heart. Bright harmonica pulses emphasize the optimistic tone. Harmonica fills also introduces the flirty, full throttle Honky-Tonker, “Deep River Hollow”. Singing ‘place your hands upon my hips and turn me while the record skips’, Flynn offers a sultry invitation to let the music take you away. The Riveters continue the Texas roadhouse feel through “Drunk in Ojai”, “Little Red Wing”, “Shake the Stranger”, and “Bird in a Cage”. On all of these songs, Ashleigh Flynn & The Riveters make you want to put on your boots and best blue jeans, then hightail it to the nearest sawdust-covered dance floor. Shifting gears somewhat, the band displays their range on the Laurel Canyon inspired Folk Rock of the Good Morning, Sunshine title track. They go full Country on the tearful ballad “Love Is an Ember”. They channel Bill Monroe on the fiery Bluegrass of “Don’t Leave Me Lonesome” and add Celtic rhythms to the Bluegrass on “Tilly Jane Ridge”. Giving a nod to the original girl groups of the early 60’s, the band recreates that wall of sound feel on “Much Too Proud”. Ashleigh Flynn & The Riveters are an exciting, authentic Honky-Tonk band that is absolutely riveting.
