April 05Tommy Malone (from the album A Lil’ Bit Softerth, 2025

Tommy Malone (from the album A Lil’ Bit Softer Now available as a self-release)
Marching guitar chords and horn accents hop on board steady rolling rhythms when Tommy Malone cruises “Black Tar Road” to open his recent release, A Lil’ Bit Softer Now. Namechecking lyrics from The Isley Brothers “Shout” as a title for the album, Tommy Malone presents a wide variety of Soul music. Late night Soul noir when he wears the skin of “Gypsy” as an assured stride takes him across the Country Soul of “Lonesome Drifters Lullaby” while a wandering piano reverie helps tell the tale in “Lonely as a Picture” and ambient sonics texture the Jazzy Blue fabric that begin the groove for “No More Sad Songs”. A Lil’ Bit Softer Now is a spinning wheel of Soul music, Tommy Malone skillfully guiding the tracks through a landscape of Bluesy rhythms and heartfelt stories.
Born in New Orleans, the sound of his city can be heard in his music, whether as a solo artist or recording of The Subdudes, the band Tommy fronted through their early years in the late 1980’s until they disbanded in 1996. The Subdudes reformed in 2002 and remained active until the Covid pandemic took them into retirement as individual members pursued solo projects. With a handful of solo releases in his pocket, Tommy Malone brings a rich history of influences, and a journeyman’s mastery of Rock‘n’Soul, to the tracks of A Lil’ Bit Softer Now. Bringing a cocktail lounge vibe to the Pretenders “Don’t Get Me Wrong”, Tommy Malone puts a shuffling rhythm underneath the memories of “Your Sweet Kiss” as he exits A Lil’ Bit Softer Now with observations on the human condition as he waves memories like a flag over “Memorial Day”.
