Amy Speace (from the album The American Dream available on Proper Records) (by Lee Zimmerman)

Amy Speace is one of the most profound singer/songwriters making music today; no idle statement by any means. A listen to any of her recent albums — Me and the Ghost of Charlemagne (2019), There Used to Be Horses Here (2021), and Tucson (202) - bear that fact out, and with her brilliant new effort, The American Dream, there’s no disputing it in any way whatsoever. Speace makes music that resonates through power, passion and a steady surge of anthemic intensity, effectively stirring sentiment from the get-go. She draws on raw emotion, but she articulates it in such a way that ensures it remains as resolute and emphatic.

Consequently, The American Dream is as decisively and determined as its name implies. Working with producer Neilson Hubbard, an exceptional artist in his own right and one who clearly knows his way around the boards, Amy Speace sings of the trials, triumphs, and tribulations that intersect with the journey that life takes with every twist and turn. The riveting, resounding title track and “Homecoming Queen” suggest a provocative premise, but with the songs that follow — “In New York City”, “Glad I’m Gone”, and “Love’s Gonna Come Again” in particular — Speace surveys her circumstance with an exacting insight that testifies to both her courage and conviction.  Taken in tandem, these songs resonate in ways that are immensely affecting and nothing less than consistently compelling. ‘All my life I’ve had the urge to run away to the unknown’ she sings on the lovely ballad “This February Day”, taking stock of her situation with both verve and vulnerability in the process.

Needless to say, the melodies are as emphatic as the conviction she conveys. “Something ‘Bout A Town”, “Already Gone”, and “First Limited Methodist Christmas Show” prove that point wholly and descriptively, imparting various scenes and scenarios that bring the sentiment fully to the fore. Ultimately, they make The American Dream a truth we can all believe it. (by Lee Zimmerman)
