Over the course of time, bands create a brand for their music. At some point, the search for validation is shelved once the band becomes ambassadors for their own sound, the songs becoming callings cards. Twenty years on and as many album releases, American Aquarium have built their musical catalog on intuition and influences. Their songs play host to touches of Rock’n’Roll, Country, Folk, Blues, Americana, and a dozen other sub-genres and styles. The recent release from American Aquarium, New Ways to Lose, showcases music that has found its sweet spot, a double-edged sword that can draw blood from the heartfelt emotions in the life-reflecting words of songwriter/frontman BJ Barnham and the Rock’n’Roll drive of the band.
 
Fulfilling the recording process prophecy of each album reflecting the moment it was recorded, BJ Barham weighs in stating ‘all of my records are yearbooks. Twenty years from now, I'll pull them off the shelf and remember exactly who I was when I wrote them’. 
 
New Ways to Lose is an audio snapshot of life in 2026. A mirror is held up to “Bad Habits”, the story not taking sides as it lays out pieces of life that land both in the plus and minus columns, a model that travels across the tales on the album. The eyes of BJ Barham speak through his lyrics as he tackles the demise of smalltown America (“Dollar General”), pointing out reality for those that find themselves on the wrong side of history (“History Repeats Itself”), and standing proud for personal accomplishments (“Can’t into Could”). American Aquarium channel the E-Street Band when a song of love travels down the ages in “Twin Flames” and an open-road groove rolls down the windows to feel the breeze with “4x60”. New Ways to Lose yearns for true connection in piano-balladry of “Out There in the Dark” while American Aquarium weighs the decisions of a friend without judgment in “Whatever Helps You Sleep at Night”.
