5/3/2025 Ally Venable (from the album Money & PowerAlly Venable (from the album Money & Power available on Ruf Records) (by Danny McCloskey)
Toasting her new release, Money & Power, Ally Venable is joined by Christone ‘Kingfish” Ingram as the pair raise a glass of “Brown Liquor” on the album’s opening cut. The title track is a dose of sonic fury while Money & Power shares the promises of “Keep Me in Mind” on gently rolling rhythms and pops out a beat on the angular groove in “Legends”. Of the recording, Texas guitar slinger Ally Venable claims ‘Money & Power is such a strong statement, especially for women’. Recorded in Nashville’s SoundStage studios, the album brought producer Tom Hambridge back to sit behind the board as well as wander into the studio to supply drumbeats. Ally Venable is a triple presence on Money & Power, her strong songwriting skills supported by her electric guitar work and heart-on-the-sleeve, powered-up vocals. She draws a sonic line in the sand for “Stepping Stone” and slows to a stroll with the slightly-spiteful rules doled out in “Maybe Some Day”. Money & Power makes a request over snarling guitar riffs for “Heal Me” and wonders “Do You Cry” on a slowly simmering groove that rides underneath. Ally Venable stands on a hammering beat to deliver “Feel That Sting” and confidently struts over the bounce of “Stopper Back Papa” as she is joined by Shemekia Copeland for the tale in “Unbreakable”. Exiting Money & Power Ally Venable delivers a Blues Rock version of Janet Jackson’s “Black Cat”.
