On her recent release, In the Hour of Chaos, Allison Russell used the songs as a platform to further a radical agenda. With words and music, she encourages her fellow humans to Feel Good on eleven tracks that solidly support that intention. She is supported by a host of musicians on the album after beginning the song cycle all by herself on the colorful Funk of “Rainbows”. A hushed Folk Rock soundtrack backs Allison Russell when she is joined by Devon Gilfillian on “Love is a Golden Lion” as Kara Jackson and Denetia Explore! Pop Choir join in to keep the rhythms warm with a caffeinated beat in “Cold April”.
 
A thick groove carries Allison Russell and Britteny Spencer (Alabama Shakes) across “Black Lavender” as Joy Oladokun and Julie Williams become a united storm-identifying front to predict the weather with “No Springtime”, pointing out there is ‘no springtime in the Blues’. Looking up at the night sky, Allison Russell and Chibueze Ihumoa count “Two Stars”, marching down “Just Like Saturday” on heavy footfalls alongside Ruby Amanfu, and keeping the backbeat firm as she looks for a “Searchlight” with Kashus Culpepper. In the Hour of Chaos namechecks the title when Sara Watkins and Kyshona join in to discuss their take on “Chaos Theory” as a solid stroll welcomes in Norah Jones on “Really Real” before Allison Russell exits the album on the dreamscape melodies of “Good Omens”, with vocal assistance and harp accents from Ahya Simone.
