Named 2017 Female Vocalist of the Year at the California Country Awards, Nashville’s Alice Wallace conveys feelings of intimacy and vulnerability through a series of songs that inhabit her new album, the aptly titled Here I Am. They find her unafraid to reveal her innermost emotions, courtesy of music that’s candid, confessional, and thoroughly engrossed with shared sentiment, mostly having to do with the highs and lows of romance entanglement. In the process, she engages her listeners and, in turn, opens herself up in ways in which they might relate. Here then, she shares plaintive and personal thoughts and feelings, and in so doing, comes to certain conclusions that are as vivid as they are vital. Wallace manages to maintain a consistent tone throughout, one that reflects her pensive perspective. The stirring sounds of “Imposter” convey the initial impression, courtesy of a self-effacing narrative that’s both stirring and striking. “Looking” and “I Was Wrong” find Wallace remorseful but resolute, fully willing to reflect on her failings while attempting to reconcile them as well. “Fireflies” has her somewhat conflicted, expressing her affection for her native California even while professing her happiness for life in Tennessee. ‘It seems so green here in Tennessee’ she sings ever so softly, adding, ‘California, I think of you all the time, but I don’t know If I’ll be back anytime soon’. Produced by Nick Buda, the man behind the boards for records by Taylor Swift, Martina McBride, and Dolly Parton, the album features Buda on drums, along with Grammy-winning guitarist Kenny Greenberg, bassist Ted Pecchio, and keyboardist Jimmy Wallace. All add to the album’s rich, resilient textures and its ever-so precise perspective. The soulful strains of “Better Than This,” “Bonfire” and “I Was Wrong” each attest to those delicate yet well-defined designs. One might easily get the feeling that after four previous albums of story songs, Alice Wallace is now choosing to turn her music into a form of therapy, while seeking a means of baring her soul. When, on the closing track, “I Love the Way”, she sings ‘I love the way you break my heart’ as she offers the impression that even pain has its perks.
