Alan Williams (from the album Floating on a Dreamline

Alan Williams (from the album Floating on a Dreamline available on Blue Gentian Records) (by Danny McCloskey)
For his recent release, Floating on a Dreamline, Alan Williams enters the record bearing both good news and bad news. The opening track optimistically makes claims for the plus column with “Somewhere There’s a Train”. The down side crawls into the song on the chorus of ‘somewhere there’s a train, it ain’t stopping’. Over the course of a baker’s down tunes, Alan Williams offers observations and opinions with sharp-angled guitar notes and a vocal authenticity that demands attention. Adding another thumbs up for take-what-you-can-get happiness, Floating on a Dreamlineoffers a default positivity with “Nobody Died” as the story encourages to listen less to the words of others as “A Sliver of Forever” dreamily drifts over a reverie about our world and the sky above.

A day gig as a professor of Music at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, Alan Williams steps away from his Ivy League role to deliver a parcel of Folk Rock tracks that lean heavily on snarling guitar licks and lyrics that provide both questions and answers. A hammering beat propels “Feel No Pain” as the ambient sounds of waves lapping become the hushed rhythm flowing under “The Darkness of Love”. Jangly guitar strings announce “Whisper” while Jazz chords pluck out a summer-breeze groove for “Before My Eyes”. Alan Williams doses “Goes Floating By” with Psychedelia and utters “A Prayer” on assured acoustic strums as he confidently strides over a DIY-guide of wisdom for “Just Like Water”.
