A.J. Croce (from the album Heart of the Eternal

A.J. Croce (from the album Heart of the Eternal available on Seedling Records/BMG) (by Danny McCloskey)
Taking a break from his Croce Play Croce tour, which tributes the songs of his late father Jim Croce, A.J. Croce found time to stop in LA’s Sunset Sound studio to record Heart of the Eternal. Shooter Jennings sits in the producer’s seat for the recording that brings in an A-list backing: James Pennebaker (Delbert McClinton, Jimmie Dale Gilmore) on guitar, David Barard (Dr. John) on bass, and Gary Mallaber (Van Morrison) on drums. The recording is a spinning wheel of sounds, Soul music coming from the strut of “Didn’t You Want That Too” and the last-night noir mood in “All You Want”, the Rock’n’Roll rhythms of “On a Roll”, also found on the high-stepping beats for “Turned Around, and a New Orleans R&B goodbye in “So Much Fun”.

As a small child A.J Croce became a virtuoso on the piano, touring with B.B King by age eighteen. His career has seen him tour with legends (Willie Nelson, Leon Russell, The Neville Brothers, Bela Fleck, Ry Cooder) and penning co-writes (Dan Penn, Robert Earl Keen, Gary Nicholson). The piano became more than just a performance tool for a young A.J. Croce. The multi-instrumentalist suffered a complete loss of eyesight from age four to ten, and blind piano-men such as Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles were inspirational and comforting as he dealt with his condition. A marching beat opens Heart of the Eternal with “I Got a Feeling” as he hops on a mighty beat to offer a shout-out with “Hey, Margarita”, slowing the rhythm to a stroll for “Reunion”, and sinking back into sweet Soul in “The Best You Can”. A.J Croce exits Heart of the Eternal joined by Margo Price for “The Finest Line”. (by Danny McCloskey)
