Alt Root Weekly Top Ten 3/4/2026
Originally “Go Light a Candle” was released anonymously last year. After ICE began killing American citizens, Rodney Crowell felt he needed to stand proud with his song. He shared that ‘although I expected the last presidential election to turn out exactly as it did, I wasn’t ready for what would come next. I shared with my good friend, Sam Baker, how I wanted to write a protest song that wasn’t strident or blatantly insulting anyone’s intelligence other than my own. He listened to what I had written and said, ‘now go light a candle’. From there, I knew what the song needed to say. Emmylou, Lera Lynn, and Dan Knobler helped me frame the music and, after releasing it anonymously a year ago, in response to the ICE raids in Minneapolis and other sanctuary cities, I decided to stand openly behind the song’. Rightfully landing in the #1 spot, Rodney Crowell is joined by Emmylou Harris and Lera Lynn for “Go Light a Candle’. Continuing with a welcome trend of speaking truth to ward off a greedy government high on power, Aaron Lee Tasjan offers a commentary on the state of society with “Science Friction”. Thomas Csorba details the pros and cons of having a laser-focus on the tiny twinkle of fame with “The Big Time”, an advance listen to his upcoming (05-22-26) release, Tender Country. India Ramey is “Scattered and Smothered” underneath the glare of a Waffle House as she sits with her late night/early morning breakfast order in a musical tale from her upcoming (05-08-26) album, Villian Era. Based in Roanoke, Virginia, Michael & The Pentecost feel the right outfit is “Coke Pants” to experience a night of dancing with a cut from their new E.P., Meantime as Danny Golden falls under the spell of “War Fever” with a tune from his upcoming (06-24-26) The Big Blue. Yarn acknowledges that despite their best efforts it is “Never Enough” on a track from their upcoming (04-24-26) release, Saturday Night Sermon. while Tyron Benoit and Choupic Sessions offer a Rock’n’Roll single that has them on their “Tippy Toes”. A Brother’s Fountain are a group of outdoor enthusiasts and adventure guides who partner with Zach Baumann in a musical story that describes the musical side of their lifestyle with “We Come in Peace” on the Top Ten on Wednesday March 4, 2026.
